An employee of Sugarloaf Ski Resort has been charged with murder in the shooting death of his longtime girlfriend.
Austin Doucette, 24, was arrested as he sped away from the Left Bank condo building in Carrabassett Valley, where the killing took place.
He was scheduled to appear in a Franklin County courtroom Wednesday.
The victim, 23-year-old Makayla Rose Desantis, was rushed to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington and then Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she died from her injuries.
Her sister created a GoFundMe page to raise money for her funeral.
Desantis and the accused gunman are originally from Connecticut and were working at Sugarloaf.
Her sister Max Desantis wrote: “I never imagined I’d have her taken away from me this soon, or ever. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do to have her back, Makayla did not deserve what happened to her.”
