The most important question facing the Maine Legislature and Gov. Janet Mills today is how to budget for our immediate needs in health care, housing, education, food security and roads. The cuts to federal funding have been devastating, and inflation is surging. I think taxes are the only way to solve this crisis.

Republicans keep insisting on tax cuts, but never say how they will pay for all our needs.

No one wants to see their taxes increase, but do you really think all those earning hundreds of thousands of dollars, and even millionaires should pay less? The issue is tax fairness.

The good news is that there are already bills waiting to be included in the budget process now under way in Augusta. One is LD 229: An Act to Bring Fairness in Income Taxes to Maine Families by Adjusting the Tax Brackets. Another is LD 1879: An Act to Support Maine’s Agricultural Economy by Increasing the Corporate Income Tax. These would raise millions of dollars for our budget.

We want our Legislature to send a budget next month to Gov. Mills that gives us some relief from federal chaos and hope for our state’s future, for our children’s sake.
