I think Peter Cookson’s letter, published in the March 7-8 Bangor Daily News, is spot on, that Gov. Janet Mills should get out of the race to replace Sen. Susan Collins.
I take it as given that we need to vote out Collins and her Republican enablers. It’s the next best thing to getting rid of President Donald Trump. I also think Mills has been a reasonably good governor, though I think she has been seriously wrong on the issue of Wabanaki sovereignty (but hey, nobody is perfect).
The problem for me with Mills for the U.S. Senate is her age. She is 78 now, and she has said she will only serve one term. But there are already enough elderly members of the Senate. We don’t need more.
In the Senate, seniority is everything, and you can bet Collins will emphasize hers. I think we need to replace her with someone young enough to build up seniority. Mills has already rendered herself essentially ineffective by saying she will only serve one term.
