Maine school board to vote on removing George Mitchell’s name from elementary school

There’s expected to be a vote Monday night on whether to change the name of an elementary school in Waterville.

School board members for the George J. Mitchell Elementary School are expected to vote Monday night.

The vote comes after the school’s namesake, former lawyer and senator George Mitchell, was named more than 300 times in recently released Jeffrey Epstein files.

According to the Sun Journal, the school was named after Mitchell, a Waterville native, back in 1995.

Now a school policy committee has recommended returning to the school’s original name of “Brookside.”
