Nottingham triple killer Valdo Calocane put a flatmate in a headlock and trapped him in his flat, an inquiry has heard.

The witness, Christopher – who lived with Calocane in student accommodation – said “nothing happened” after he contacted police about his ordeal, which he likened to being held hostage.

Mobile phone footage was shown to the central London inquiry on Thursday, showing paranoid schizophrenic Calocane holding him in a headlock on 15 January 2022.

The central London inquiry previously heard how Calocane headbutted, punched and swung handcuffs at a police officer just a few months before in September 2021.

Then in the early hours of 13 June 2023 he went on to fatally stab University of Nottingham undergraduates Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19, and grandfather Ian Coates, 65. He also attempted to kill three more people.

Recalling the 2022 assault, Christopher, who shared a six-room student flat with Calocane and others in Faraday Road, Nottingham, said he had confronted him over leaving the bathroom in a mess.

Calocane then came “flying across the room” and threw a punch, Christopher said, adding: “I dodged the punch and then we were wrestling.

“He ended up getting me in a headlock.”

He told the inquiry he called police but Calocane refused to let him leave.

Instead he stared him down as he waited for officers to arrive.

Asked if it felt like a hostage situation, he said: “It did feel like that at the time because when the assault happened there were two other people in the room.

“It was just me and him at that point and he’s staring into my eyes.

“Yeah, it did feel like that to me.”

Christopher was left with a stiff and painful neck following the attack.

But the police officer who arrived was “dismissive”, telling him “we do this thing called restorative justice”, he told the inquiry.

“They did not arrest him and nothing happened”, Christopher added.

At the end of his evidence, Christopher said he believed he and others were put at risk because they were not told about Calocane’s medical history.

“I got lucky,” he said.

Calocane is currently detained indefinitely in a high-security hospital after prosecutors accepted his not guilty pleas to murder at his sentencing at Nottingham Crown Court in January 2024.
