Former MLB pitcher Dan Serafini was sentenced to life in prison in February 2026 after he was found guilty of shooting his in-laws in 2021.
In July 2025, Serafini was found guilty of murdering his father-in-law Gary Spohr, and attempting to murder his mother-in-law Wendy Wood. He was also found guilty of first-degree burglary related to the incident.
Wood survived the attack, but suffered brain damage as a result of the shooting. In 2023, Wood died by suicide at an assisted-living facility.
Serafini’s sentencing was originally scheduled for August 2025, but was ultimately postponed. He was officially sentenced on February 27, 2026.
What to Know About Dan Serafini, the Ex-MLB Pitcher Serving Life in Prison

Ex-Wife Erin Spohr
Serafini is serving a life sentence after he was found guilty of shooting his in-laws — his then-wife Erin Spohr’s parents — Gary Spohr and Wendy Wood.
Erin filed for a divorce after Serafini’s conviction, but claimed in the filing that she and Serafini have an “amicable relationship.”
Erin also supported Serafini throughout the trial in 2026, even going so far as to submit a statement of support for the former baseball player asking the judge for leniency in his sentencing.
During the original proceedings, she took the stand and testified on her ex-husband’s behalf, claiming that Serafini did not play any role in the incident and describing him as a devoted father and loving husband.
Erin and Serafini were married in 2010 — in an extravagant wedding in Hawaii — and originally met when Spohr was hired to work for Serafini’s first wife, Renee.
Erin claims that the two did not start dating until after Serafini and Renee were divorced, but records show that Serafini and Erin were married on Jan. 23, 2010, and Renee filed for divorce on Jan. 21, 2010.

Two Unnamed Sons, Aged 7 and 4
Throughout the divorce proceedings, Erin was seeking sole custody of their two young sons, but did not request child support or alimony from Serafini.
Ex-Sister-In-Law Adrienne Spohr
While Erin was supporting Serafini throughout all his legal proceedings, his former sister-in-law, Adrienne Spohr, wasn’t as kind.
After Serafini’s sentencing in 2026, Adrienne spoke about her parents’ shooting.
“Erin Spohr, unfortunately, is my sister,” she said. “And I wish that she had never brought Dan Serafini into our lives. Dan embodies true evil.”
She continued, “He thought he had gotten away with murder. He thought that he would be cashing out my parents’ estate with his wife in the months afterwards. He was happy while my dad laid deceased while my mom laid bleeding out on her couch clinging to life.”
In 2023, it was Adrienne who revealed that her mother died by suicide at an assisted-living facility after narrowly surviving the 2021 attack.

“The heartbreak of losing my dad — and knowing who was responsible [for his death] — became too much,” Adrienne said in an August 2025 interview with People. “She said it felt like she had lost her right arm.”
Family Friend Samantha Scott
While not a direct part of the family, Samantha Scott and Serafini were allegedly having an affair throughout his marriage with Erin, although Erin has previously testified that she and Serafini maintained an amicably open relationship.
Scott — a family friend who also served as the family’s nanny — was also arrested and charged in connection to the shooting, but cut a deal with prosecutors to plead guilty to a lesser accessory charge in exchange for testifying against Serafini in court. She pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact in February 2025. Scott was released until sentencing and faces up to three years in prison.
