Monmouth Academy junior Levi Laverdiere picked a good time to score his 1,000 career point.

The guard crossed that major individual milestone with a 33-point performance in the Class D boys state championship on Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center.

And that gave him more than half of his team’s points in the 51-41 championship win over the Machias Bulldogs.

It was a great day for him individually, but he was more concerned with the team’s performance. Laverdiere didn’t hesitate after the game when he said that the state championship was more important to him than joining the 1,000-point scoring club.

Levi Laverdiere of Monmouth drains a three pointer early in the second quarter of the Class D State Championship game against Machias High at the Augusta Civic Center.

And his Monmouth coach wasn’t surprised at all that Laverdiere cared more about the team’s success than his own.

“I think his game speaks for itself. Everyone in Monmouth has known about him for quite some time,” said Monmouth coach Wade Hill. “I think the state, he doesn’t get a lot of attention, maybe because of his size. But he showed he’s one of the elite, premier shooters in the state of Maine. And everyone sees why now.”

Laverdiere shot 50% from beyond the arc, making seven 3-pointers over the course of the game. He also went eight of 10 from the free throw line, and brought down three rebounds as well.
