The ex-husband of former first lady Jill Biden has pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder after the death of his wife.
William Stevenson, 77, appeared via video link in court in Wilmington, Delaware, on Tuesday in connection with the death of 64-year-old Linda Stevenson last year.
He was married to Ms Biden from 1970 to 1975.
A state grand jury this month charged Stevenson with first-degree murder after his wife was found at their home in Wilmington on 28 December.
At the time, police said they were called to the couple’s home shortly after 11pm for a reported domestic dispute, and discovered Ms Stevenson unresponsive in the living room.
He has remained in custody since he was charged on 3 February with murder, unable to post the $2m (£1.48m) bail.
The results of a post-mortem have not been revealed.

Stevenson founded the Stone Balloon, a popular music venue in Newark, Delaware, in the early 1970s.
Ms Stevenson ran a bookkeeping business and was described in her obituary as a family-oriented mother and grandmother and a Philadelphia Eagles fan. The obituary does not mention her husband.

“One hug from her, and all your worries would disappear,” her daughter, Christine Mae, wrote in a Facebook post.
“The pain of losing her is paralyzing, and the emptiness in my heart is an abyss.”

Ms Biden wrote in her memoir that her marriage with Stevenson unravelled as they grew in different directions, calling its collapse “the biggest disappointment of my young life”.
She married Delaware senator Joe Biden in 1977, and he later served as US president from 2021 to 2025.
Ms Biden’s spokesperson has said that she has no comment on the murder case.
Stevenson’s next court hearing is set for 16 March.
