ST. AGATHA, Maine – The Acadian Pond Hockey Classic, an annual hockey tournament held in northern Aroostook County that raises money for local minor hockey programs in Maine and New Brunswick, is gearing up for its 7th annual tournament.
Tournament committee chair Dean Collins said the weather outlook is also positive for the weekend of Feb. 21 and 22, when the tournament will be held.
“The long-range forecast includes excellent weather,” he said. “We currently have ample ice, and we anticipate optimal playing conditions.”
The 3-on-3 tournament will feature players from Maine and Canada in both open and rec divisions. The open division is competitive and intended for people who consistently play hockey while the rec division is geared towards players who are more focused on having fun and supporting the cause.
Collins said earlier this week that 17 teams are currently signed up and that there is still availability for additional entries.
This year’s tournament will also feature a 4-foot by 8-foot digital scoreboard, courtesy of a partnership with Pattison Signs in Edmundston, New Brunswick. The scoreboard will help recognize sponsors and also let players track the game in real-time.
The event will also include two food trucks. Portland-based Barry Larry, who will offer Asian cuisine, and Maine-ly Meat ’n Potatoes. Northern Maine Brewing Company will also be serving craft beer on site.
Collins said they will also continue using the new Zamboni they secured last year, which is the only one in the St. John Valley, to maintain their ice.
“We take great pride in our organization and look forward to delivering our best tournament yet,” Collins said.
