Season 8 of CBS’ hit series FBI is building up to unexpected romance — and onscreen surprises.

Newcomer Juliana Aidén Martinez spoke exclusively to Us Weekly about what the show is building up to, saying, “[Showrunner] Mike [Weiss] and the team are doing such a great job and each episode is getting more and more high stakes. It really feels like we’re doing Mission Impossible – like an action movie every week.”

Martinez, who plays Eva, is “always astounded” by what is yet to come.

“This is crazy and yet we do it because we have such a great crew,” she noted. “We have such a great team and I think the fans will be really excited to see that every episode just gets bigger, bigger and better.”

Which ‘FBI’ Stars Are — And Aren’t — Returning for Season 8?

FBI, which premiered in 2018, centers on the inner workings of the New York City field office criminal division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where the personnel work to ensure the safety of New York City and its citizens. In addition to Martinez, Missy Peregrym, Zeeko Zaki, Jeremy Sisto, Sela Ward, Alana de la Garza, John Boyd and Lisette Olivera make up the rest of the cast.

“Before I came into the show, I sat down with showrunner Mike Weiss and told me who he was thinking Eva was going to be. That was really the deciding factor for me to be like, ‘Yes, this is something that’s very interesting to me. This is something that I think I can offer and give value to and make it exciting and different,’” Martinez told Us. “I liked that she was different than Kate in Law & Order: SVU. I really like that Eva came from a prosecutorial background so she’s very much someone that’s not afraid to speak her mind and is not afraid to be the smartest person in the room. She’s unabashed in that sense and she’s unabashedly feminine, tough and has a big heart.”

According to Martinez, Eva’s backstory will continue to play out.

“I do think trust is something that probably has to be earned [with her], regardless if she likes to say it or not. There was a definite breaking of trust when she comes into the story in which she was with someone that was her partner — and she was with them romantically and professionally,” she recalled. “So she probably made an exception to that rule of dating her partner and yet she couldn’t see it. She was so smart and has been always doing the right thing and she couldn’t see the person she was in bed with betraying her. That’s a deep wound.”

Eva is still adjusting to her new normal, with Martinez adding, “That resistance or that struggle is really interesting with someone who really prides themselves in knowing everything ahead of everybody else. It does create some humility in her. It also creates an ability to learn to really take it as a challenge and as an adventure.”

As for Eva’s personal life? Martinez isn’t ruling out a romance.

“We will see some romance in this season. I won’t say from who but we will see some romance,” she teased. “[For Eva], I do think that her heart is resilient enough to find love. So I hope so.”

FBI airs on CBS Mondays at 9 p.m. ET.
