Award-winning producer Harvey Weinstein’s Hollywood empire crumbled in the wake of dozens of sexual assault allegations and multiple criminal prosecutions.

A string of accusations about Weinstein’s past conduct from actresses Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Rosanna Arquette and Cara Delevingne, as well as numerous other figures from the entertainment industry, brought the #MeToo movement to a new level of visibility and helped usher in significant changes to Hollywood sets.

Weinstein has always denied accusations of nonconsensual sex and other wrongdoing — though he was convicted of sexual assault in New York in 2020 and Los Angeles in 2022. Weinstein’s initial conviction in New York was overturned on appeal in 2024, but he was later convicted of sexually assaulting Project Runway assistant Miriam Haley upon retrial. (The disgraced mogul was acquitted of another count related to accuser Kaja Sokola.)

In his 2025 New York retrial, the jury was deadlocked on the alleged third-degree rape of actress Jessica Mann, setting up a third trial. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office plan to retry Weinstein in March 2026 over Mann’s rape accusation.

Harvey Weinstein confirmed he was taking a leave of absence from The Weinstein Company hours after The New York Times published a bombshell report detailing decades of sexual misconduct allegations against him.

In the Times piece, Weinstein was accused of reaching financial settlements worth between $80,000 and $150,000 with at least eight women over the years. Among the alleged victims to go on the record was Ashley Judd, who accused Weinstein of conducting a business meeting in his hotel room while wearing a bathrobe. He allegedly asked if Judd wanted to watch him take a shower.

“How do I get out of the room as fast as possible without alienating Harvey Weinstein?” Judd remembered thinking.

Weinstein’s then-lawyer Charles Harder dismissed the New York Times investigation as being “saturated with false and defamatory statements” about the executive. Yet, Weinstein confirmed in a statement that he was working with a group of therapists to “learn about myself” and “conquer my demons.”

“I came of age in the 60’s and 70’s, when all the rules about behavior and workplaces were different. That was the culture then,” the Oscar winner said in October 2017. “I have since learned it’s not an excuse, in the office — or out of it. To anyone. I realized some time ago that I needed to be a better person and my interactions with the people I work with have changed. I appreciate the way I’ve behaved with colleagues in the past has caused a lot of pain, and I sincerely apologize for it. Though I’m trying to do better, I know I have a long way to go. That is my commitment.”

Harvey Weinstein’s brother, Bob Weinstein, announced that his sibling had been fired from The Weinstein Company amid the sexual harassment and assault allegations.

“In light of new information about misconduct by Harvey Weinstein that has emerged in the past few days, the directors of The Weinstein Company — Robert Weinstein, Lance Maerov, Richard Koenigsberg and Tarak Ben Ammar — have determined, and have informed Harvey Weinstein, that his employment with The Weinstein Company is terminated, effective immediately,” a company spokesperson told Us Weekly.

October 10, 2017

The New Yorker published its own findings from Ronan Farrow’s 10-month investigation, including new allegations of misconduct from Rosanna Arquette, Mira Sorvino, Asia Argento, Emma de Caunes and several of Harvey Weinstein’s former employees. Multiple women alleged that they faced threats of retaliation and career repercussions if they refused Weinstein’s sexual advances.

Among the shocking accusations were Arquette alleging that Weinstein once grabbed her hand “and pulled it toward his penis” at The Beverly Hilton in the 1990s. Sorvino accused Weinstein of blacklisting her from movie roles when she rejected his advances.

Weinstein’s attorneys reiterated to Us Weekly that “allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied.”

“Mr. Weinstein has further confirmed that there were never any acts of retaliation against any women for refusing his advances,” his rep said. “Mr. Weinstein obviously can’t speak to anonymous allegations, but with respect to any women who have made allegations on the record, Mr. Weinstein believes that all of these relationships were consensual. Mr. Weinstein has begun counseling, has listened to the community and is pursuing a better path. Mr. Weinstein is hoping that, if he makes enough progress, he will be given a second chance.”

October 10, 2017

Angelina Jolie alleged in an email to The New York Times that she had “a bad experience with Harvey Weinstein in my youth.”

“As a result, I chose never to work with him again and warn others when they did,” she wrote. “This behavior towards women in any field, any country is unacceptable.”

Weinstein’s lawyers denied any wrongdoing.

October 10, 2017

Gwyneth Paltrow accused Harvey Weinstein of inviting her to his Peninsula Beverly Hills hotel suite in 1996 while she was filming Emma. According to Paltrow, Weinstein suggested they go to his bedroom to give each other massages.

“I was a kid, I was signed up, I was petrified,” she told The New York Times.

Paltrow said that she confided in her then-boyfriend Brad Pitt, who later confronted Weinstein at a movie premiere.

“[Harvey called] and screamed at me for a long time,” she said. “It was brutal … I was expected to keep the secret.”

After the alleged incident, Paltrow recalled that Weinstein alternated between acting “generous and supportive and championing and punitive and bullying.”

“We’re at a point in time when women need to send a clear message that this is over,” Paltrow stressed. “This way of treating women ends now.”

Weinstein denied acting improper towards Paltrow.

October 10, 2017

Us Weekly reported that Harvey Weinstein and his second wife, Georgina Chapman, separated in the wake of allegations against the producer. (Chapman married Weinstein in 2007 and they share two children: India, born in 2010, and Dashiell, born in 2013. Weinstein also has three older daughters — Remy, Emma and Ruth— from his first marriage to Eve Chilton, which ended in divorce in 2004.)

Chapman subsequently told Variety: “My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions. I have chosen to leave my husband. Caring for my young children is my first priority and I ask the media for privacy at this time.”

Weinstein broke his silence on his pending divorce later that same day.

“I sat down with my wife Georgina, who I love more than anything, and we discussed what was best for our family,” he told Us in a statement. “We discussed the possibility of a separation and I encouraged her to do what was in her heart. In the end, she made the decision to separate. I understand, I love her and I love our children and hopefully, when I am better, I will be in their lives again. I support her decision, I am in counseling and perhaps, when I am better, we can rebuild.”

The former couple reached a divorce settlement in January 2018.

October 11, 2017

Cara Delevingne alleged via Instagram that she received a call early in her career from Harvey Weinstein. He allegedly asked whether she had “slept with any of the women [she] was seen out with in the media.”

“It was a very odd and uncomfortable call,” she wrote. “I answered none of his questions and hurried off the phone but before I hung up, he said to me that if I was gay or decided to be with a woman especially in public that I’d never get the role of a straight woman or make it as an actress in Hollywood.”

The model alleged that Weinstein asked to speak with her alone “a year or two later” when she was meeting with a director about a project.

“As soon we were alone he began to brag about all the actresses he had slept with and how he had made their careers and spoke about other inappropriate things of a sexual nature. He then invited me to his room,” she said. “I quickly declined and asked his assistant if my car was outside. She said it wasn’t and wouldn’t be for a bit and I should go to his room. At that moment I felt very powerless and scared but didn’t want to act that way hoping that I was wrong about the situation.”

Harvey Weinstein Slams Ashley Judd, More Allegations in Interview Trailer

Delevingne remembered arriving at Weinstein’s hotel room to find another woman present.

“He asked us to kiss and she began some sort of advances upon his direction. I swift[ly] got up and asked him if he knew that I could sing. And I began to sing,” she went on. “I thought it would make the situation better, more professional, like an audition. I was so nervous. After singing I said again that I had to leave. He walked me to the door and stood in front of it and tried to kiss me on the lips. I stopped him and managed to get out of the room. I still got the part for the film and always thought that he gave it to me because of what happened. Since then I felt awful that I did the movie. I felt like I didn’t deserve the part.”

The Suicide Squad actress confessed that she was “so hesitant about speaking out” even in the wake of other accusations against Weinstein.

“I felt guilty as if I did something wrong. I was also terrified that this sort of thing had happened to so many women I know but no one had said anything because of fear,” she acknowledged.

In a separate post that same day, Delevingne shared an empowering statement: “I want women and girls to know that being harassed or abused or raped is NEVER their fault and not talking about it will always cause more damage than speaking the truth. I am relieved to be able to share this. I actually feel better and I’m proud of the women who are brave enough to speak. This isn’t easy but there are strength in numbers.”

A spokesperson for Weinstein denied any wrongdoing on his behalf.

October 12, 2017

Kate Beckinsale accused Harvey Weinstein of once conducting a private business meeting in a bathrobe and offering her alcohol when she was 17.

“I was incredibly naive and young and it did not cross my mind that this older, unattractive man would expect me to have any sexual interest in him,” she wrote via Instagram. “After declining alcohol and announcing that I had school in the morning I left, uneasy but unscathed.”

The two allegedly crossed paths “a few years later,” with Weinstein allegedly asking Beckinsale “if he had tried anything with me in that first meeting.”

“I realized he couldn’t remember if he had assaulted me or not,” she wrote. “I had what I thought were boundaries — I said no to him professionally many times over the years — some of which ended up with him screaming at me calling me a c*** and making threats, some of which made him laughingly tell people, ‘Oh, Kate lives to say no to me.’”

Weinstein’s spokesperson denied any wrongdoing.

October 12, 2017

The Guardian reported that police in both New York City and London were investigating Harvey Weinstein.

“The Met has been passed an allegation of sexual abuse by Merseyside police on Wednesday 11 October,” a London police spokesperson confirmed. “The allegation will be assessed by officers from the child abuse and sexual offences command.”

U.K. prosecutors later discontinued the investigation.

Meanwhile, NYPD officer Lieutenant John Grimpel said that his department was conducting “a review to determine if there are any additional complaints relating to the Harvey Weinstein matter.”

“No filed complaints have been identified as of this time,” Grimpel added.

October 12, 2017

Rose McGowan publicly accused Harvey Weinstein of raping her in an October 2017 tweet. The New York Times previously reported that McGowan reached a private settlement with Weinstein over “an episode in a hotel room” when she was 23 years old but the Charmed star had declined to comment at the time.

“[Harvey] was thanked more than God at the Oscars,” McGowan later said during an episode of the “We Need to Talk” podcast in 2026. “I found out very quickly that he was making payments, on average, like every week [to] various people he’d assaulted. But they had to sign something called an NDA, a nondisclosure. … In my mind, it was like, ‘Oh, you can never heal from this.’”

McGowan claimed that she “kinda tricked” Weinstein by asking for “the smallest sum possible that would still seem reasonable.”

“I didn’t want a million because I’d have to sign an NDA,” she pointed out. “But if I asked for $100,000, I could buy a billboard. I wanted to buy a billboard that said, ‘Loser Weinstein is a rapist.’ But what that $100,000 got me was a document saying, ‘This is to buy peace.’ But it was not a nondisclosure.”

A spokesperson for Weinstein said: “All allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein.”

October 12, 2017

Multiple media outlets reported that Weinstein entered a treatment facility in Arizona to undergo “intensive therapy.” However, Us Weekly confirmed less than one week later that Weinstein had checked out of the program.

October 14, 2017

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences formally voted to revoke Harvey Weinstein’s membership during a board meeting. (Weinstein personally won an Oscar for producing Shakespeare in Love and his former company Miramax received 68 Academy Awards.)

“[The Academy voted] to immediately expel him from the Academy,” a spokesperson said. “We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over.”

“What’s at issue here is a deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society,” the Academy statement continued. “The board continues to work to establish ethical standards of conduct that all Academy members will be expected to exemplify.”

October 17, 2017

Lauren Holly recalled wanting to “flee” when she was allegedly sexually harassed by Harvey Weinstein during a private meeting in his hotel room years earlier. The What Women Want star opened up about her recollections during an appearance on Canadian talk show The Social.

“[Weinstein] dropped his robe, went into the bathroom in front of me and began to use the toilet. All the time, talking. Now at this point, my head’s exploding,” she remembered. “He keeps the conversation going, he finishes, he turns on the shower, he gets in the shower, he’s continually talking to me.”

She further recalled, “He’s in the shower washing himself, leaning out, asking me for responses. My head is going crazy at this point. I don’t know. He’s acting like the situation is normal. He’s acting like we’re having a normal encounter. I’m thinking to myself, ‘Am I just a prude? Am I supposed to be more open-minded?’ I didn’t quite know how to handle myself in that moment.”

Holly alleged that, after Weinstein got out of the shower, he “did not put on the robe and came toward me.”

“When he came toward me, everything changed. The adrenaline rush I felt, I wanted to flee, I was scared. He told me I looked stressed,” she said. “He said he thought maybe I could use a massage. Maybe I could give him a massage. I began sort of just babbling like I was a child. I think it was just fear. I said, ‘I don’t know how to give a massage. I don’t have a massage license. Maybe if I call the front desk we can get a masseuse to come here.’ Like I didn’t know what to do, honestly.”

Holly said that Weinstein “began to get angry” and warned her that she would be making “a bad decision” if she left the room. She ultimately did leave and went to a dinner party with “other influential people in Hollywood.”

“I arrived crying, I had hives. They noticed immediately,” she remembered. “[They] asked me what had happened. I told them and their response was, ‘Did he touch you? Were you raped?’ I said, ‘No.’ And they said, ‘Then you need to keep your mouth shut, because it’s Harvey Weinstein.’”

Weinstein has denied all allegations made against him.

October 19, 2017

Quentin Tarantino acknowledged in an interview with The New York Times that he “knew enough to do more than I did” about misconduct accusations against his longtime collaborator Harvey Weinstein. (Weinstein produced Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction through his company Miramax and was also involved with Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight, among other projects.)

“There was more to it than just the normal rumors,” he acknowledged. “The normal gossip. It wasn’t secondhand. I knew he did a couple of these things.”

Tarantino admitted that he “wish[ed he] had taken responsibility for what [he] heard.”

“If I had done the work I should have done then, I would have had to not work with him,” the filmmaker conceded.

Tarantino confirmed that he knew about his ex-girlfriend Mira Sorvino’s allegations against Weinstein.

“I was shocked and appalled,” Tarantino said. “I couldn’t believe he would do that so openly. I was like, ‘Really? Really?’ But the thing I thought then, at the time, was that he was particularly hung up on Mira. I thought Harvey was hung up on her in this Svengali kind of way. Because he was infatuated with her, he horribly crossed the line.”

The director confessed, “What I did was marginalize the incidents [to continue working with Weinstein] … Anything I say now will sound like a crappy excuse.”

October 19, 2017

A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed to Us Weekly that Harvey Weinstein was under investigation for allegedly raping an Italian model in 2013.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the 38-year-old woman — who requested to remain anonymous due to security concerns — met with LAPD officers for two hours over her allegations that Weinstein assaulted her at the Mr. C Beverly Hills hotel in February 2013.

Weinstein denied wrongdoing through his attorneys.

October 28, 2017

Annabella Sciorra and Daryl Hannah spoke publicly for the first time about allegedly enduring sexual assault and harassment at the hands of Harvey Weinstein.

Sciorra described a violent assault that she said occurred after a business dinner in New York City. She remembered Weinstein giving her a ride home, before knocking at her door shortly after dropping her off and pushing his way inside her apartment.

“He walked in like it was his apartment, like he owned the place, and started unbuttoning his shirt. So it was very clear where he thought this was going to go,” she told The New Yorker. “He shoved me onto the bed, and he got on top of me. I kicked and I yelled.”

Sciorra alleged that her body began to physically shake when Weinstein tried to perform oral sex on her against her will

“I think, in a way, that’s what made him leave because it looked like I was having a seizure or something,” she theorized.

The Sopranos star said she never went to the police because she was “so ashamed of what happened.”

“I fought. I fought,” she insisted. “But still, ‘I was like, Why did I open that door? Who opens the door at that time of night?’ I was definitely embarrassed by it. I felt disgusting. I felt like I had f***ed up.”

Meanwhile, Hannah shared two incidents that she said happened at European film festivals years apart. In the first encounter, Weinstein allegedly started knocking on her hotel room door after they’d exchanged contact information earlier in the day at the Cannes Film Festival.

“It was sort of incessant, and then it started turning into pounding on my door,” she recalled.

Hannah said she fled into her makeup artist’s room through a side door and spent the night there. However, the Splash actress recalled that Weinstein returned the next day.

“The knocking started again and again,” she said. “And I was like, ‘Oh, s***.’ We actually pushed a dresser in front of the door and just kind of huddled in the room.”

Many years later, Hannah was in Italy to promote Kill Bill: Volume 2 in 2004. She alleged that, this time, Weinstein managed to get into her hotel room.

“He had a key. He came through the living room and into the bedroom. He just burst in like a raging bull,” she remembered. “And I know with every fiber of my being that if my male makeup artist was not in that room, things would not have gone well. It was scary.”

Weinstein allegedly invited Hannah to a reception, only for her to find it “completely empty” when she arrived. She accused Weinstein of berating her with a barrage of inappropriate questions as she waited for an elevator.

“[He asked,] ‘Are your tits real?’ Then he asked if he could feel them. I said, ‘No, you can’t,’” she recollected. “And then he said, ‘At least flash me, then.’ And I said, ‘F*** off, Harvey.’”

Hannah insisted that she “did tell people about it” but that it “didn’t matter.”

A spokesperson for Weinstein denied any wrongdoing.

November 3, 2017

Paz de la Huerta accused Harvey Weinstein of raping her twice in November and December 2010. She said the first incident occurred after Weinstein offered her a ride home from the Standard High Line hotel in Manhattan.

“Immediately when we got inside the house, he started to kiss me and I kind of brushed [him] away,” de la Huerta told Vanity Fair. “Then he pushed me onto the bed and his pants were down and he lifted up my skirt. I felt afraid… It wasn’t consensual… It happened very quickly… He stuck himself inside me… When he was done he said he’d be calling me. I kind of just laid on the bed in shock.”

The second incident allegedly occurred in December of 2010 when Weinstein showed up at de la Huerta’s building after repeatedly calling her.

“He hushed me and said, ‘Let’s talk about this in your apartment,’” de la Huerta told Vanity Fair. “I was in no state. I was so terrified of him… I did say no, and when he was on top of me I said, ‘I don’t want to do this.’ He kept humping me and it was disgusting. He’s like a pig… He raped me.”

NYPD officer Nicholas DiGaudio subsequently told the publication that Weinstein could face possible arrest.

“I believe based on my interviews with Paz that from the NYPD standpoint we have enough to make an arrest,” DiGaudio said.

Criminal charges were never brought against Weinstein over these allegations. He settled a civil matter with de la Huerta in 2019.

November 6, 2017

Harvey Weinstein was formally expelled by the Television Academy after being accused of sexual misconduct by more than 70 women. (Weinstein was nominated for 16 Emmy Awards throughout his career.)

“After a hearing today, the Television Academy’s governance has voted to expel Harvey Weinstein from the Academy for life,” a spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. “The Academy supports those speaking out against harassment in all forms and stands behind those who have been affected by this issue. The unfolding and widespread examples of this horrific behavior are deeply disturbing to the Academy’s leadership.”

May 25, 2018

Harvey Weinstein surrendered to New York City police following a months-long investigation into his alleged misconduct by the NYPD. He was charged with first-degree rape, third-degree rape in one case and first-degree criminal sexual act. The alleged sex offenses were committed against two women in 2004 and 2013, respectively.

Lucia Evans alleged that Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex at his office in 2004. The second accuser — who requested anonymity — alleged that Weinstein raped her in a hotel room in 2013.

Weinstein was released from custody after posting $1 million bail.

June 5, 2018

Harvey Weinstein pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape and one count of a criminal sex act during a court appearance. His attorney Benjamin Brafman told reporters that “Mr. Weinstein has denied these crimes.”

“He has maintained that he has never engaged in non-consensual sex with anyone,” the lawyer added.

July 2, 2018

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office indicted Harvey Weinstein on one additional count of a first degree criminal sex, per Deadline. Former Weinstein Company staffer Miriam “Mimi” Haleyi alleged that Weinstein sexually assaulted her at his New York City residence in 2006.

“A Manhattan Grand Jury has now indicted Harvey Weinstein on some of the most serious sexual offenses that exist under New York’s Penal Law,” District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. said in a statement. “This indictment is the result of the extraordinary courage exhibited by the survivors who have come forward. Our investigation continues.”

Weinstein pleaded not guilty to the additional charge.

October 11, 2018

BBC News reported that one of the six sexual assault charges against Harvey Weinstein had been dismissed because a discrepancy arose over Lucia Evans’ account that she was sexually assaulted by Weinstein in 2004.

Prosecutors acknowledged that a witness said during an interview with an investigator that they’d heard a differing version of events from Evans. Prosecutors said that the detective “failed to inform” them of “important details” from that witness interview.

Weinstein’s attorneys called for the count to be dismissed and prosecutors did not object.

Evans’ attorney, Carrie Goldberg, insisted that the “prosecutors’ decision to abandon my client’s claims does not invalidate the truth of her claims.”

January 6, 2020

Harvey Weinstein’s criminal trial officially kicked off at the Manhattan Criminal Court in New York City.

By the time his trial opened, Weinstein was accused of two counts of predatory sexual assault, as well as one count of rape in the first degree and one count of rape in the third degree for the 2013 accusation. The producer also faced a criminal sexual act charge in the first degree for the 2006 incident.

That same day, The Los Angeles Times reported that Weinstein was charged with two counts of forcible rape, two counts of forcible oral copulation and one count of sexual penetration by use of force in L.A. These charges stem from accusations from two women alleging that Weinstein attacked them in 2013.

“We believe the evidence will show that the defendant used his power and influence to gain access to his victims and then commit crimes against them,” Los Angeles District Attorney Jackie Lacey said in a statement at the time. “I want to commend the victims who have come forward and bravely recounted what happened to them.”

Weinstein denied all wrongdoing.

February 24, 2020

A jury of seven men and five women convicted Harvey Weinstein on two of five counts: criminal sexual act in the first degree and rape in the third degree. He was spared a potential life sentence after being acquitted of predatory sexual assault.

Weinstein’s attorney Arthur Aidala and co-counsel Donna Rotunno told reporters that their client “took it like a man” after learning of the verdict.

“All he kept saying over and over again was, ‘I’m innocent. I’m innocent. How could this happen in America? I’m innocent. I’m innocent,’” Aidala said. “The evidence was not so powerful. Jurors normally don’t deliberate for five days, whatever it is, over a weekend. So it’s really seven days. So it wasn’t that there was such overpowering evidence.”

The former Weinstein Company boss was hospitalized following the hearing when he complained of chest pains and high blood pressure. A sentencing hearing was scheduled for March 11, 2020.

March 11, 2020

Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison by Judge James Burke. Weinstein accusers Annabella Sciorra, Jessica Mann, Miriam “Mimi” Haley, Tarale Wulff, Lauren Young and Dawn Dunning were all in court to witness the sentencing after testifying during the trial.

“We thank the court for imposing a sentence that puts sexual predators and abusive partners in all segments of society on notice,” Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. said in a statement. We thank the survivors for their remarkable statements today and indescribable courage over the last two years … Their words took down a predator and put him behind bars, and gave hope to survivors of sexual violence all across the world.”

Weinstein’s attorneys announced plans to appeal.

October 10, 2022

Harvey Weinstein’s criminal trial in Los Angeles officially began, where he faced charges of forcible rape, one count of forced oral copulation and one count of sexual penetration by a foreign object. These L.A. charges related to accusations from four women spanning 2004 to 2013.

Weinstein was extradited to Los Angeles in July 2021 and held in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, where Chris Brown, Paris Hilton and, later, Nick Reiner served time.

The two-month trial featured testimony from multiple women accusing Weinstein of sexual misconduct, including California Governor Gavin Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom. (Siebel Newsom, a filmmaker, accused Weinstein of rape and sexual assault during a 2005 business meeting at a Beverly Hills hotel in 2005.)

During closing arguments, L.A. County Deputy District Attorney Marlene Martinez asked the jury to bring Weinstein to justice after decades of alleged abuses.

“It is time for the kingmaker to be brought to justice,” Martinez argued.

December 20, 2022

In Los Angeles, Harvey Weinstein was convicted on three of seven charges — forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, and sexual penetration by a foreign object

The former Miramax executive was acquitted on one count of sexual battery, while the jury was hung on one count of sexual battery by restraint, one count of forcible oral copulation and one count of rape.

February 23, 2023

Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 16 years in prison in the Los Angeles case.

“I maintain that I’m innocent,” Weinstein insisted in court.

April 25, 2024

The New York State Court of Appeals overturned Harvey Weinstein’s rape conviction on the basis that the judge prejudiced the trial with “egregious” rulings, including allowing women to testify about allegations that weren’t directly part of the case.

“We conclude that the trial court erroneously admitted testimony of uncharged, alleged prior sexual acts against persons other than the complainants of the underlying crimes,” the appellate decision read. “The remedy for these egregious errors is a new trial.”

The majority of justices on the New York State Court of Appeals agreed that there was “an abuse of judicial discretion to permit untested allegations of nothing more than bad behavior that destroys a defendant’s character but sheds no light on their credibility as related to the criminal charges lodged against them.”

Harvey Weinstein Clarifies His Justin Baldoni Comments: ‘Not Taking Sides’

Douglas H. Wigdor, an attorney who represented eight of Weinstein’s victims, told Us Weekly the overturning of the 2020 conviction was “a major step back in holding those accountable for acts of sexual violence.”

“Courts routinely admit evidence of other uncharged acts where they assist juries in understanding issues concerning the intent, modus operandi or scheme of the defendant,” Wigdor told Us. “The jury was instructed on the relevance of this testimony and overturning the verdict is tragic in that it will require the victims to endure yet another trial.”

April 28, 2024

Harvey Weinstein was hospitalized in New York City’s Bellevue Hospital. A spokesperson for New York state confirmed that Weinstein would temporarily remain in custody due to his conviction in California.

May 1, 2024

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced that his office would proceed with a retrial against Harvey Weinstein. Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Curtis Farber set the start of the trial for “sometime after Labor Day — the exact date to be determined.”

“We believe in this case and we will be retrying the case,” Nicole Blumberg of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said in court. “We have every belief that the defendant will be convicted again.”

June 7, 2024

Harvey Weinstein’s lawyers formally filed to appeal his December 2022 conviction in Los Angeles.

His legal team argued that Weinstein was denied the right to a fair trial because a judge incorrectly excluded evidence that cast doubt on defense witnesses’ testimony. They also alleged that the judge was wrong to allow the jury to hear about the now-vacated New York City conviction since it did not directly impact the L.A. case.

“[Weinstein was denied] his constitutional rights to present a defense and led to a miscarriage of justice,” his attorneys insisted in their appeal letter.

They went on, “The introduction of this excessive, cumulative, and remote evidence of prior ‘sexual assaults’ simply signaled to the jury that the Defendant was a bad man who should be convicted of something irrespective of whether the prosecution proved its case.”

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Harvey Weinstein would face additional charges in his New York retrial. An indictment handed down on September 18, 2024, charged Weinstein with a first-degree criminal sex act.

This new charge stemmed from accusations from model Kaja Sokola. She alleged that Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on her at a Manhattan hotel in 2006.

The New York retrial of Harvey Weinstein officially started with jury selection at a Manhattan criminal courthouse. He was tried this time on two counts of criminal sexual act in the first degree and rape in the third degree.

The two-month trial featured testimony from Kaja Sokola as a star witness. She described allegedly being sexually assaulted by Weinstein at a Manhattan hotel in 2006, just before her 20th birthday.

Describing the impact of the alleged assault, Sokola testified: “My soul was removed from me.”

Harvey Weinstein was convicted of one count of criminal sexual act in the first degree, relating to Miriam “Mimi” Haley’s allegations from 2006. However, he was acquitted of the same charge involving former model Kaja Sokola. The jury could not reach a consensus on Jessica Mann’s allegation that Weinstein raped her in a New York City hotel room in 2013.

The jury was instructed to keep deliberating on the Mann allegation.

Judge Curtis Farber formally declared a mistrial when the jury indicated that they were deadlocked on Jessica Mann’s rape in the third degree count against Harvey Weinstein. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the “jury foreperson refused to return to the jury room Thursday after saying he faced threats from other jurors.”

“I will say [the jury] were extremely disappointed that deliberations ended before they reached a verdict,” Judge Farber announced in court.

Following the announcement of a mistrial, Mann said she would “never give up on myself and making sure my voice — and the truth — is heard.”

“I have told the District Attorney I am ready, willing and able to endure this as many times as it takes for justice and accountability to be served,” Mann vowed. “Today is not the end of my fight.”

Mann insisted she would “never lie about rape or use something so traumatic to hurt someone.”

That same day, Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg, Jr. confirmed that his team was “ready to go forward to trial again on that charge” after “conferring with Jessica Man.”

“We know it takes immense courage to come forward,” Bradd went on. “And as was clear to everyone in that court room for the past several weeks, it takes immense courage to get on the stand and testify.”

The prosecutor went on, “Miriam Haley, Jessica Mann, and Kaja Sokola each spent days on the witness stand, sharing the most traumatic moments of their lives in a room full of strangers. Their credibility and character were attacked during lengthy cross-examinations.”

‘They were accused of being money hungry. They were called liars. They were even told that they, in fact, were the abusers,” Bragg added. “But they stood their ground. And for that I am extraordinarily grateful.”

A March 3, 2026, retrial date was set for Harvey Weinstein in New York, after Judge Curtis Farber denied the mogul’s lawyer Arthur Aidala’s motion to have the criminal sexual act conviction vacated.

Despite Weinstein’s complaints about his 2025 retrial, Judge Farber told him: “I promised you that you’ll have a fair trial. And a fair trial I believe you had.”

Weinstein previously refused any plea deals that would require him to plead guilty to rape. However, Aidala indicated in court that Weinstein might now consider a guilty plea if “there was a court [sentence] offer that would run concurrent” to his other prison sentences.

If Weinstein were to be convicted of Class E felony, he could face a maximum of four years behind bars. He is currently serving time in New York’s Rikers prison ahead of his second retrial.
