A Millinocket town councilor is accused of routinely stealing cash from her work.
Gail Mackin, 73, of Millinocket was arrested Thursday for theft, the East Millinocket Police Department said. Her term on Town Council ends in November.
Mackin worked for the Katahdin General Store and allegedly would steal cash from the business, the police department said.
She is charged with one misdemeanor count of theft in Lincoln District Court. She has no court dates scheduled.
East Millinocket police started investigating the alleged theft in September after employees at the general store saw Mackin take money from the store money bag, police said. Police watched hours of the store’s video footage.
The videos showed Mackin would “routinely” accept cash from customers and not put the money into the cash register, police said. She would also place money into a bank bag and later take cash out, the department said.
Mackin did not return a request for comment. She posted bail after her arrest, police said.
Police were unable to determine how much money Mackin allegedly stole because the thefts happened over a long period of time and there were a lot of hours of videos.
The town adopted changes to its charter in 2025 that makes it clear that there is no action the Town Council can take unless she is proven guilty in court, Chair Matthew Bragdon said.
“That’s one of the staples of living in America — innocent until proven guilty,” Bragdon said.
If someone on the Town Council, town manager or school board is convicted of a felony, they automatically vacate their position under the charter amendment.
