A vacant house in Bangor caught fire Sunday morning.
The fire was called in shortly after 9 a.m. at 181 Ohio St., Bangor Fire Chief Geoff Low said. When crews arrived there was a “significant amount of fire” on the backside of the building, he said.
Firefighters got the heavy smoke and fire under control quickly and were opening up walls and searching for hidden fire as of 9:30 a.m.
The building is vacant, Low said. It’s unclear why the fire started and it is under investigation.
The extreme cold and windchill are a problem because it causes hoses to freeze. Firefighters also get wet, which then freezes and makes them even colder, Low said.
On Sunday morning, Bangor had a temperature of 1 degree, with a windchill of -18, according to the National Weather Service.
No injuries have been reported, he said.
This is the second vacant building fire in Bangor in just a few days. A vacant garage caught fire Thursday morning.
