The operator of Britain’s biggest cash machines network has recruited a former head of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) as its next chairman.

Sky News understands that Tom Ilube, who stepped down as the RFU chair in 2024, will become the new chairman of LINK.

An announcement is expected to be made on Monday.

A non-executive director of WPP, the marketing services group, Mr Ilube has also served on the board of the BBC.

His appointment at LINK comes as Britons’ use of cash continues to decline.

There are more than 40,000 ATMs in Briton connected to the LINK network, although that number has fallen in recent years.

LINK is owned by its members, which include the UK’s biggest banks and building societies, as well as the Post Office.

In a statement on Sunday, Mr Ilube said: “Access to cash remains vital for millions of people and businesses, and ensuring no one is left behind as payments continue to evolve is a responsibility I take very seriously.

“LINK has a critical role to play in maintaining that access while helping the UK navigate a rapidly changing financial landscape.”

The new chairman succeeds Sir Mark Boleat, who had held the role for nine years.
