An Amtrak Downeaster train hit a truck in North Berwick on Thursday, killing a young driver.

The driver of the pickup truck was a senior at the school, according to a letter from Noble High School.

His identity is not being released at this time.

North Berwick Police Chief Stephen Peasley said investigators are still gathering details about the collision, specifically how the truck got on the tracks.

“We requested accident reconstructionist from Kennebunk and South Portland police departments,” Peasley said.

Amtrak said the Downeaster train departed from Brunswick just after 1 p.m. Thursday and was scheduled to arrive at North Station in Boston at 4:15 p.m. The collision happened about 3 p.m. at a crossing on Route 4.

One passenger said she got on the train in Saco and was heading south to a Bruins game with her kids when they felt a jarring hit of some kind.

“The speed limit for Amtrak on this section is 79 miles an hour. I don’t believe they were going that quite that fast, but that is the speed limit here,” Peasley said.

The passenger said about five minutes later, the train came to a stop.

Peasley said there was minor damage to the train.

“The truck was pushed into the signal and that was damaged. It has to be replaced now,” Peasley said.

The collision remains under investigation.
