At least 11 people have been killed in a crash between a truck and a minibus taxi in South Africa – the second such incident in recent days.

It happened near Durban, in the country’s eastern KwaZulu-Natal province.

Local transport department official Siboniso Duma said 11 people had died and a child was believed to be among the fatalities.

Garrith Jamieson, spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, confirmed the number of dead and said several people were also critically injured, including the driver of the minibus, who was trapped in the wreckage.

The collision comes just over a week after a crash involving a truck and minibus taxi killed 14 schoolchildren near Johannesburg.

The 22-year-old driver of the minibus in that incident has been charged with 14 counts of murder. He is accused of recklessly overtaking a line of traffic before the head-on collision.
