U.S. Border Patrol arrested four immigrants who were allegedly in the country illegally in Washington County over the weekend.
The four were allegedly acting suspiciously at an ATM at Machias Savings Bank in Calais on Saturday, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which didn’t elaborate.
Agents later stopped the group in a Toyota RAV4 on Route 9 in Crawford, Customs and Border Protection said Wednesday.
Agents discovered that all four were allegedly in the U.S. illegally, and three of them had been issued final orders to leave. The fourth had recently been released on bond from a prior immigration arrest and was allegedly in violation of his conditions of release.
They will be turned over to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for removal from the U.S.
“The safety of our agents and the communities we serve is paramount,” Houlton Sector Chief Derrick Stamper said. “The relationships we have built with local law enforcement and residents make these types of apprehensions possible. Border Patrol agents are members of these communities and have a vested interest in making them as safe as possible.”
