The University of Michigan reportedly spent a small fortune on its investigation of allegations of misconduct against former head football coach Sherrone Moore.
According to a Monday, January 26, report from the Detroit Free Press, the school spent nearly $62,000 in November 2025 for two weeks of work related to allegations of sexual misconduct between Moore, 39, and a female staff member.
The university paid law firm Jenner & Block $61,888 after receiving a 10 percent discount, per an invoice obtained by the outlet. The invoice further noted that one lawyer charged nearly $2,400 an hour, while another charged more than $1,600 an hour.
The Free Press noted that the school’s full bill could be much higher, as the university only provided an invoice for November 2025 but likely billed additional hours in December and January. The school fired Moore on December 10, 2025, but later authorized an investigation into the athletic department.
Sherrone Moore Faced Multiple Investigations Into Alleged Conduct Before Firing
The fee structure outlined in the university’s engagement letter with the law firm noted that invoices “include out-of-pocket expenses and internal charges” but did not specify whether any of the lawyers requested payment for additional services.
Moore was fired from his position at U-M last month after “credible evidence” emerged that he had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a member of his football staff.
“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” athletic director Warde Manuel announced in a December 2025 statement. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”

After the university fired Moore, he allegedly broke into the staff member’s home and began to threaten her and himself with a knife.
“[The staff member] indicated that she was approximately 5 feet from the door when he made entry,” court records said. “She advised that she began backing up and as he was approaching her. [She] advised that Moore grabbed two knives out of her drawer and pointed them at her, ‘You ruined my life. You ruined my life.’”
Moore then allegedly backed the woman toward her living room. Once she got her attorney on the phone, Moore “backed up and turned the knives on himself, pointing them at his neck, saying that he was going to kill himself and that she was going to watch.”
Sherrone Moore’s Alleged Relationship With Staffer Didn’t Surprise Colleagues
Moore then fled the apartment and was arrested in a nearby church parking lot. He was released on $25,000 bond and ordered to wear a GPS ankle monitor. He was also forbidden from contacting the staff member.
Sherrone married wife Kelli Moore in 2015, and they share three daughters: Shiloh, born in 2019, Solei, born in 2022, and Sadie, born in 2025.
Earlier this month, Kelli supported Sherrone as he appeared in court for a probable cause hearing. The duo held hands as they walked toward the courtroom, where his lawyer sought a 30-day adjournment to gather additional discovery. The prosecution did not object, and the hearing was rescheduled for March 19.
