Old Town’s schools went into lockdown Wednesday morning.
Regional School Unit 34 sent out an alert about 8:19 a.m. informing parents about the lockdown.
Roughly 20 state, county and local police cars lined the driveway to the Old Town Elementary School on Stillwater Avenue around 9 a.m., a Bangor Daily News reporter saw. Parents flocked to the parking lots of the nearby Bangor Savings Bank and Hannaford.
Those parents who hadn’t already dropped off their children were advised to not approach the schools at the time.
Police were assessing a situation, which the district didn’t provide details about.
The University of Maine, whose property abuts the elementary school, sent out an alert to the Orono campus saying that RSU 34 received a threat Wednesday morning, prompting the lockdown.
In a 9:14 a.m. alert, UMaine said the situation was resolved and the campus had returned to “normal operations.”
At 9:40 a.m., a Penobscot County sheriff’s deputy said the lockdown was lifted and parents could enter the school and pick up their children.
