Amanda Seyfried has thrown her hat in the ring to play Dolly Parton in a biopic someday.
Seyfried, 40, gushed about the Queen of Country, 79, in a Q&A with Deadline published Thursday, January 15, pitching an idea for a musical about Parton.
“I would love to play a role that requires me to play an instrument as well on camera,” the Mean Girls alum shared. “I would love to play, probably, a musician who plays the guitar because that’s the thing that’s the hardest right now.”
When asked if there was a particular musician she had in mind to portray, Seyfried said, “Eva Cassidy has a story out there. … And you could make a Dolly Parton musical. There’s a story there too, obviously. My God. And her voice. Her sweet, sweet sweetheart voice.”

Seyfried also called Parton “one of the best human beings on the planet,” noting that it would be “fun” to play her.
Fans of Seyfried previously called for the Mamma Mia! star to play Joni Mitchell in a biopic after she covered one of the singer’s songs on the dulcimer, a folk stringed instrument, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in March 2025.
“It’s, like, a lap instrument. It’s an acoustic instrument, a wood instrument,” Seyfried said at the time, explaining that she learned to play the dulcimer “during the pandemic for almost two years.”
“[Mitchell] wrote a lot of the songs from the Blue album on the dulcimer,” Seyfried explained before performing Mitchell’s “California” for the audience. “And I learned a lot of stuff from her Blue album when the world stopped.”

Seyfried’s cover ignited rumors that she would play the folk-rock singer, 82, in the upcoming biopic directed by Cameron Crowe. However, Seyfried denied the speculation during an appearance on the “Just for Variety” podcast.
“It was not an audition,” she clarified. “In fact, I didn’t even consider that, which is funny. What I know about that project is that I’m very, very much aged out of young Joni.”
Anya Taylor-Joy is instead rumored to play the young version of Mitchell, with Meryl Streep rumored to play her modern-day counterpart. Crowe, 68, played coy when asked about the casting speculation during a September 2025 interview with The New York Times.
“Can’t confirm that. I wish I could,” he said at the time.

Though Seyfried won’t be portraying Michell in the upcoming film, she said in a December 2025 interview with Who What Wear that her viral “California” cover did land her new gigs.
“I got work from that,” Seyfried shared. “I feel like that made more of an impact than my Emmy did.” (The actress earned her first Emmy Award in 2022 for her portrayal of disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu’s The Dropout.)
Seyfried again denied her participation in the Mitchell biopic during her Deadline Q&A. However, she admitted that she “prepared” for such a role.
“It was a project that was kind of on the verge, and I had an incredible time learning her Blue album and I learned the guitar in a new way,” she said. “It was musically so incredibly challenging and so fun because once you really, really nail the songs when you play them enough, it becomes like second nature, and it’s just, like, so fulfilling and so life-affirming.”
