Mainers will see a mix of snow and rain throughout the state Saturday, ahead of a winter storm moving in Sunday night.
As of 5:30 p.m. Friday evening, a storm watch has been issued for southeast Aroostook County, central Penobscot County and northern Washington County. These regions could see 2 to 4 inches of snow starting mid-morning Saturday and continuing into Sunday morning, according to forecasters with the Caribou National Weather Service.
Coastal Down East regions are expected to experience some intense wind through Friday night and into early Saturday. Southern and coastal Maine are likely to see some windy conditions and stormy weather forming on Sunday and into Monday.
Temperatures will generally hover around typical seasonal norms, with daytime temperatures in the high 20s to low 30s through northern Maine over the weekend and heading into Martin Luther King Day. Skies will be mostly clear throughout the day, providing a reprieve from the snowy conditions over the weekend.
Looking forward to Tuesday of next week, daytime temperatures are expected to hover around the mid-teens, although the forecast remains uncertain at this point in time.
Travel will be impacted by Saturday’s storm, with slick conditions forming on roadways, especially those roads that do not have sand or salt on them. Above-freezing temperatures Sunday and into some of Monday will also create conditions for slushy snow to form before daytime temperatures plunge into freezing conditions.
Drivers are urged to use caution, and should ensure thick accumulations of snow are removed from the top of vehicles and lights are turned on during snow squalls and rainy or foggy conditions.
