Timothy Busfield‘s lawyer is speaking out after the actor was accused of inappropriately touching a teenage girl more than 20 years ago.
“The allegations were never challenged, they were never proved, and they’re 25 years old,” civil attorney Larry Stein noted in a statement to People on Wednesday, January 14. “And there doesn’t seem to be any connection between these allegations regarding women 25 years ago and the allegations regarding these young boys.”
A pretrial detention motion filed earlier on Wednesday included claims by a man named Colin Swift, whose daughter accused Busfield, 68, of sexual abuse several years prior.
“While auditioning for [Busfield] at B Street Theatre, the 16-year-old reported that [Busfield] kissed her and put his hands down her pants and touched her privates,” the motion alleges.

Busfield reportedly “begged the family to not report to law enforcement if he received therapy,” and as a therapist himself, Swift “thought at the time that was the best thing to do.”
B Street Theatre issued a statement to People on Wednesday addressing the accusations, noting they are “aware of a report concerning Timothy Busfield regarding an incident alleged to have occurred at B Street Theatre approximately 25 years ago.”
“B Street Theatre retained legal counsel at the time to conduct an internal investigation, and Mr. Busfield has not had any role in the organization since 2001,” the statement continued.
The theatre insisted, “He is not involved in our current operations, staff, leadership, or programming. Although he is listed as an emeritus board member, he has not participated in theatre governance or attended a board meeting since that time.”
Further details could not be provided due to the active investigation underway in New Mexico following Busfield’s recent arrest.

“As an organization that has served Sacramento and the greater region for decades, our mission remains to provide a safe, creative, and inclusive environment for artists, students, families, and audiences,” the statement concluded. “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by abuse or exploitation in any form.”
Authorities in New Mexico issued a warrant for Busfield’s arrest on Friday, January 9. An affidavit obtained by Us Weekly accused Busfield of inappropriately touching two child actors who appeared on his series The Cleaning Lady, which aired on Fox from 2022 to 2025.
The alleged abuse occurred between 2022 and 2024, according to the boys’ mother. Busfield’s warrant included accounts from other Cleaning Lady staffers, including hair and makeup artist Danielle Vigil, who claimed she saw Busfield kissing the child stars on their foreheads in a trailer.
In an interview with police, Busfield denied there was anything “weird” about his interactions with the two young boys. He faces two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse.
Several days after the allegations made headlines, the West Wing alum turned himself in to police on Tuesday, January 13. Busfield maintained his innocence in a video obtained by TMZ.
Inside the Jail Where Timothy Busfield is Being Held on Child Abuse Charges
“I’m going to confront these lies. They’re horrible. They’re all lies, and I did not do anything to those little boys,” Busfield claimed. “I’m going to fight it. I’m going to fight it with a great team, and I’m going to be exonerated. I know I am because this is all so wrong and all lies.”
Busfield appeared in a New Mexico court on Tuesday and reportedly did not enter a plea. He will remain in custody before returning for a second court appearance later this month.
In regards to the boys’ accusations, Stein previously stated that his client is “innocent and is determined to clear his name,” asserting, “The claims being made against Tim are completely false, and we will fight this to the end until the truth prevails.”
