A sinkhole has closed a portion of Main Street in Bangor on Tuesday morning.
The sinkhole opened on the southbound side of Main Street, near its intersection with Railroad Street, according to an alert from the city.

That’s prompted the city to narrow the northbound side of Main Street as crews repair the road and to allow southbound traffic to navigate around the worksite. Railroad Street is closed as well during this work.
Traffic may be affected into Wednesday, the city cautioned.
The sinkhole is at least 4 feet wide, a Bangor Daily News reporter saw at the scene. The depth of the sinkhole is unknown.
Traffic along Main Street was moving freely Tuesday morning despite the closures.
It’s not yet clear what caused the sinkhole near the Maine Savings Amphitheater, but the city suspects it could have been caused by a failed stone sewer line that crosses Main Street.
