QUOTE OF THE DAY

“It would be a shame to build a public medical school and graduate medical students and send them out of state for training and never get them back.”

— Sally Weiss, vice president of workforce policy and strategic initiatives for the Maine Hospital Association, discussing Maine’s physician shortage.

TODAY’S TOP STORIES

Bangor residents are unsurprised by the city’s rising crime and worry leaders will do nothing to stop it. Area residents last week cited visible drug use and homelessness as contributing factors to the crime surge.

This is how Maine could fix its physician shortage without a public medical school. A recent study found that creating a public medical school in Penobscot County is not financially feasible.

State Sen. Joe Baldacci is the latest Democrat vying to compete in the 2nd Congressional District race. The Bangor politician told the Bangor Daily News “there is a need for a fighter in this who can take the fight to the Republicans.”

Maine will soon have a new, lucrative online casino market. Opponents of the new law, led by the owner of at least one of Maine’s two brick-and-mortar casinos, are already threatening a people’s veto.

A longtime guard allegedly assaulted a 16-year-old at Maine’s youth prison. The former guard was charged with assault last year after allegedly putting a teenager in a headlock and lifting him off the ground.

FROM THE OPINION PAGES

“[Maine Family Planning] is often one of few health care offices that actually take patients on short notice without a months-long wait. They also offer more healthcare services than most people realize.”

Opinion: Maine’s rural health care is at risk with federal funding restrictions

LIFE IN MAINE

The creature that keeps ambushing your bird feeder. “Almost everyone who feeds birds has had this experience. A hawk suddenly flashes through the yard. Birds panic, scattering from the feeder,” Outdoors contributor Bob Duchesne writes.

Why I keep returning to this Maine river after 40 years. Discover the pristine beauty of the Kennebago River in Maine’s Rangeley Lakes Region, a haven for brook trout and landlocked salmon fishing.

Are we losing the reasons why we hunt because of trail cameras? “Cameras can give hunters an emotional boost, and … there are times during hunting season when that’s important. But in the end, we still have to hunt,” Outdoors contributor Al Raychard explains.
