Israeli strikes across Gaza kill at least 13, officials say

Israeli strikes across Gaza killed at least 13 people including a child, health officials have said.

At least one child was among the dead following the strikes in northern Gaza and east of Gaza City, according to family members and Gazan authorities.

All 13 victims were killed on Thursday, with at least a dozen others injured, hospital officials said.

The Israeli military said the strikes, which hit several Hamas fighters and the group’s “terror infrastructure”, came in response to a failed rocket attack by militants in the Gaza City area.

It comes as Donald Trump is expected to announce the members of his Board of Peace to oversee the phased ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which remains in its initial stage as efforts continue to recover the remains of the final Israeli hostage in Gaza.

The US president said the temporary governing board, led by him, will be an important step forward for his peace plan.

The board would supervise the creation of a new Palestinian government, the disarmament of Hamas, the deployment of an international security force, the further withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and the reconstruction of the wartorn enclave.

Both sides have accused each other of violating the ceasefire, with Gaza health officials saying continued Israeli strikes have killed more than 400 Palestinians.

A Hamas official told Reuters that the group had recorded more than 1,100 Israeli violations of the ceasefire since it came into effect on 10 October.

He said the violations include killings, injuries, artillery and aerial strikes, home demolitions and detention of people.

Israel said any of its military actions since the ceasefire have been in response to violations of the ceasefire by Hamas.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Hamas was still refusing to disarm – a condition outlined in the peace plan – and called the situation “extremely severe”. Israel vowed to resume military action unless Hamas disarmed peacefully.

The war in Gaza began on 7 October 2023 when Hamas killed about 1,200 people – mostly civilians – and abducted 251 others in its attack.

As part of the ceasefire, Hamas agreed to handover the remaining hostages, alive and dead.

But Israel is still awaiting the final hostage’s body, and an Israeli official close to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the country would not move to the next phase of the ceasefire until the body was returned.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed more than 71,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry, which does not differentiate between militants and civilians in its count.
