A Belmont man was sentenced on Tuesday to 120 months in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release for possessing images of prepubescent children that he downloaded from the internet, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

John Haynes, 28, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Bangor on three counts of possessing child pornography.

From March 2022 to November 2023, Haynes possessed child sexual abuse images he had downloaded on four separate cell phones, according to court records cited by the Justice Department in a news release.

Some of the images depicted children under the age of 12. Haynes was subject to enhanced penalties because of a prior state conviction for sexual misconduct with a child under the age of 14, according to the Justice Department.

The FBI and the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit investigated the case.
