A man has been detained at JD Vance’s Ohio home after reportedly breaking a window and trying to get into the house.

Secret Service agents assigned to the vice president initially detained the man on scene in the East Walnut Hills area, Cincinnati, before police officers took him into custody for causing property damage.

Agents had heard a loud noise at the home around midnight and found a person who had broken a window with a hammer and was trying to get into the house, two unnamed law enforcement officials told Associated Press.

The man had also vandalised a Secret Service vehicle on his way up the home’s driveway, one of the officials said.

Footage taken by WLWT, an affiliate of Sky News US partner network NBC, shows damage to a window.

Mr Vance and his family had spent the week in Cincinnati, but they were not at the property at the time of the incident, according to Secret Service spokesman Anthony Gugliemi.

The family left Ohio on Sunday afternoon and was back in Washington DC during the incident, Mr Vance’s press secretary Taylor Van Kirk said.

Officers and Secret Service agents were at the residence for several hours, going in and out of the house.

The man has not yet been charged, Mr Gugliemi said, as further investigations are under way.
