Greer Grammer is not holding back when it comes to detailing her relationship with her father, Kelsey Grammer.
Kelsey welcomed Greer in 1992 with ex Barrie Buckner. Greer was 4 years old when her father moved out, and they were estranged for 12 years. A chance meetup at a Christmas Tree lot in California reconnected Greer and Kelsey when she was 16 and volunteering at the establishment.
Greer explained during a November 2025 appearance on the “Pretty Basic” podcast that she discussed the possibility of Kelsey visiting the lot before it even happened.
“Towards the end of my day, I was getting ready to leave, [and] I looked to see someone come in,” Greer recalled, noting that it was her father, his then-wife Camille Meyer and their daughter, Mason. “Maybe it was just me, but I felt like I felt everybody’s breath just go [mimics breath being sucked in].”
Inside Kelsey Grammer’s Relationships With His 8 Kids
Greer decided to stay, despite the awkward moment.
“If anyone’s going to feel uncomfortable in this situation or feel like they need to leave, it’s not going to be me because I didn’t do anything wrong,” she said. “I was a kid. If anyone’s going to feel shame in this situation or guilt or weird, like, it’s not going to be me.”

Acting Advice From Her Dad
“He told me to make sure that I act because I love it,” she said during a 2014 interview. “One time we had a lengthy conversation where he was honest with me and talked to me about how unfair and cruel Hollywood can be to women, he said, ‘Don’t let it get to you.’ I still get emotional when I think about it.”
A Normal Childhood
During a 2015 interview with Glamour, Greer recalled having a “regular” childhood despite growing up with a famous father.
“Sometimes though I would wonder if people wanted to be my friend because they liked me or because of who my dad was,” she admitted. “That was my main issue growing up, which was interesting, and I still have that problem, but you find out who’s genuine.”
Earliest Memories With Kelsey
Greer said during the “Pretty Basic” podcast episode that she recalled going to the Frasier set with her dad when she was younger.
“I have a memory of going to a party at my dad’s,” Greer said in November 2025. “I have a memory of him going to my preschool play of the Wizard of Oz which he also remembers because we’ve talked about it.”

Seeing Him ‘Everywhere’ Growing Up
It was “hard” for Greer to see Kelsey as a public figure growing up, but it allowed her to understand her mom a lot more.
“I have so much respect for my mother now as an adult because I’m just like that must have been so hard to see somebody that you loved on a billboard,” Greer said on the podcast. “That broke your heart and left you with a kid that looks exactly like you and you have to see them everywhere.”
Years later, Greer’s mom said she used to write letters to Kelsey’s fan mail address.
She Saw Him Once Before
During the November 2025 podcast, Greer said that she “ran” from Kelsey at age 11 when crossing paths with him at a Blockbuster.
“I ran away,” she admitted.
Reconnecting With Kelsey
Greer and Kelsey did, ultimately, hug at the Christmas Tree lot — even though that wasn’t her initial plan.
“I was like, ‘No, I’m fine. He’s Christmas tree shopping with his family. I’m not going to go ruin that for them. Like, that little girl doesn’t deserve it,’” Greer said during the November 2025 podcast episode. “You know, like, that’s just not my place, even though, like, I would look back, and I’m like, ‘Well, it kind of was.’”

Things ended up working out, as they exchanged phone numbers after that interaction and went to lunch. That interaction kicked off their relationship.
The Last Name of It All
Kelsey apparently told Greer’s mom that it might be “easier” for her to grow up if she didn’t have his last name.
“He told me this later but he was like, ‘I said it might be better for you to not have my last name,’” she recalled during the November 2025 podcast. “I think I was 19 when he told me that and I just started sobbing. To me, that was the meanest thing you could ever say to somebody.”
What Kelsey Paid for
Greer explained that Kelsey paid his “mandatory child support” until she was 18, which included her private school tuition. He also footed the bill for college at the University of Southern California. When she was 18, Greer said she was “cut off” and clarified that she has “no trust fund.”
