LITCHFIELD, Maine — With the holidays winding down, it’s time to consider options for getting rid of the Christmas tree.

While many cities and towns offer pickup or drop off, some goat farms are happy to help as well.

At Iron Leaf Farm in Litchfield, several Nigerian dwarf goats are ready and able to strip your tree bare.

“They get trace minerals, antioxidants, forage, it helps with cutting down on hay in the winter,” farm owner Anne Seeber said.

For those in Portland, the city is offering curbside Christmas tree pick-up for two weeks starting Jan. 5. Also in January, there will be three drop-off locations in the city: the Cutter Street Parking Lot at the Eastern Promenade, Payson Park by the salt shed and Riverside Golf Course.

All trees will be chipped and mulched, according to the city’s Solid Waste Division.

They also recommend recycling other holiday items such as greeting cards, plain wrapping paper and cardboard boxes.

At the farm in Litchfield, it’s the 10th year they are accepting old Christmas trees.

“No tinsel, make sure it’s clear of all lights and ornaments,” Seeber said. “We do give them a once over before we allow the goats to have them.”

The farm on Neck Road is already accepting trees, but if you’d like to visit the goats, stop by from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday for hot cocoa, goat visits and a fire pit.
