South central and southwest Maine could see anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of snow throughout Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.

Snow is expected to fall in waves of rapid precipitation, making travel difficult throughout Wednesday morning, according to forecasters with the National Weather Service. Expect to experience low visibility if traveling.

Central and southern Piscataquis, interior Hancock, and southern Penobscot counties should expect to see 3 to 6 inches of precipitation by Wednesday morning. Coastal Hancock County is also expected to get wind gusts of up to 30 mph, creating white-out conditions.

Northern and central Penobscot, northern Piscataquis and northern Somerset counties are expected to get around 3 to 5 inches of snow overnight. Road conditions for Wednesday morning’s commute will likely be slippery.

Aroostook County will likely see the least impacts of the storm, as there is no winter storm watch or warning issued for that part of Maine.

Temperatures will be in the low to mid 20s across much of the state, although gusts throughout coastal regions will make conditions feel colder during periods of high wind.

Looking ahead, there will be some snowfall Wednesday giving way to a “white Christmas,” before windy conditions take hold of the northern regions Thursday night. Temperatures will drop to negative 10 to 20 degrees through the night Thursday, ahead of a possible nor’easter this weekend.
