The Fort Fairfield Police Department has arrested the driver of a vehicle involved in an August crash that killed two people near the Limestone town line.
Amber Turcotte, 24, of Limestone was arrested on Dec. 22 without incident, Police Chief Matthew Cummings said Tuesday in a release.
The Aroostook County grand jury indicted Turcotte on Dec. 18 on two counts of manslaughter, two counts of aggravated operating under the influence of drugs resulting in death, aggravated operating under the influence of drugs causing severe bodily injury, aggravated driving to endanger and reckless conduct.
The charges stem from an Aug. 5 crash on the Limestone Road in Fort Fairfield that killed 72-year-old Pierre Gagne and 60-year-old Carrie Smith-Gagne, both of Limestone.
Police alleged that Turcotte and a passenger were traveling south on Route 1A around 10 a.m. in a 2012 Chevy Impala when Turcotte drove into the dirt shoulder. In returning the road, police said, Turcotte overcorrected and crossed into the northbound lane, striking a 2023 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Smith-Gagne.
Smith-Gagne was pronounced dead at the scene. Gagne was taken to Cary Medical Center in Caribou, where he died that evening. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Turcotte and her passenger, 37-year-old Casey Clayton, were ejected from the Impala and suffered serious injuries.

Turcotte is being held in the Aroostook County Jail on $15,000 cash bail or $5,000 surety.
