Here and there I come across MAGA Republicans using the word “Nazi” to describe themselves. I wonder if they know the origin of that label.
In 1945, after visiting the first Nazi camp liberated in Europe by U.S. Army soldiers during World War II, General Dwight Eisenhower (later President Eisenhower) was so disgusted by what he saw he insisted that American citizens at home and German citizens in Germany, as well as others in other nations, be informed about it. Likewise, when General George Patton, as tough a soldier as they come, visited that same camp, he was so discomfited, he vomited. Today throughout Europe, Nazi symbols and flags are forbidden by law.
I suppose few MAGA Republicans know any of that history, or about the American men and women in Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard uniforms who died defending the rest of us from it. Perhaps President Donald Trump could suggest to these MAGA followers a different nickname.
