Longtime Maine high school basketball figure Carl Parker has resigned as head coach of the Brewer boys team, the school’s athletic department announced on Tuesday.
And the Witches are turning to another familiar face to coach the team for the rest of the season.
In a Wednesday email update, the school announced that former Brewer coach Mark Savage has agreed to lead the Witches for the remainder of the season.
Savage is an outdoor education teacher at Brewer High School who previously coached the team years ago.
Volunteer assistant coach Aaron Newcomb will remain in his current position, as will JV head coach Scott Flagg and first team head coach Brock Flagg, Brewer Athletic Administrator David Utterback said in the Wednesday update.
“The administration looks forward to watching these boys grow as a team and move forward together, led by Coaches Savage, Newcomb, [Scott] Flagg and [Brock] Flagg,” Utterback said.
Utterback first announced Parker’s resignation in an email on Tuesday.
“As of this morning, December 9, 2025, we have accepted the resignation of head basketball coach Carl Parker for personal reasons,” the athletic administrator said.
Parker did not immediately return a phone call on Wednesday inquiring about the situation.
He had coached the team since 2023, as part of a long and prominent coaching career in Maine high school basketball that has included stints in various capacities at Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Lee Academy, Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft, Nokomis Regional High School in Newport, Bangor High School and Old Town High School.
Parker was not the only local coach to resign on Tuesday, with John Bapst boys basketball coach Chris Bryant stepping down after several rounds of parent complaints.
