The Bangor City Council hired a new public works director Monday, ending a search that started in the spring.
The new director, David Teelon, will transition in the role after working as the infrastructure and facilities manager at Bangor International Airport.
Teelon’s hiring comes nearly eight months after Bangor’s previous public works director left in April to manage a town in Aroostook County. He told the Bangor Daily News that he starts on Dec. 28 and is excited about taking on the new role.
Before joining Bangor’s airport leadership, Teelon served 20 years in the Army and 20 years “managing various large-scale international deployments, projects, and construction operations,” according to Monday’s City Council meeting agenda. He will be paid a starting salary of $127,420.80 and signed a three-year contract.
Teelon started working at the airport about a year ago after moving to Maine, he said.

Public works is one of several city departments that have seen changes in leadership this year.
Stephanie Kimball was hired in September to replace the city’s former finance director, David Little, who resigned in May citing an “unjust personal attack” from a city councilor. Bangor’s code enforcement director position is currently vacant.
City Manager Carollynn Lear, who joined the city’s staff in June, named hiring good candidates for these open positions as a top priority when she started in the job.
