More wet and windy weather has been forecast to hit the UK this weekend, with the Met Office warning of a system to bring further “potentially disruptive weather” from next week.

Twenty-two flood warnings have been issued in England, eight in Scotland, and six in Wales – with heavy downpours more likely in South Wales, southwest England, and Cumbria.

The Met Office warned the additional rainfall could lead to localised flooding and travel disruption.

It said bands of showers, some of which are expected to be heavy with the odd rumble of thunder, will be most persistent across South Wales and southwest England.

Parts of Northern Ireland, northeast England, and southeast Scotland are more likely to experience dry weather, with temperatures expected to be near normal to rather mild across the country.

Rain is also forecast to move across the country in a north-easterly direction from Sunday.

The Met Office said persistent spells were likely in northern areas, but are expected to clear at the end of the day across much of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

But there are also warnings of potential further problems from next week.

“A deepening area of low pressure will approach the UK from the South West later on Monday, bringing with it heavy rain and strong winds, which are likely to affect the UK between late Monday and early Wednesday,” said Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Steven Keates.

“At present, the exact track, depth, and timings of this low are uncertain, which makes it harder to determine where will be most impacted by strong winds and/or heavy rain.”

Keates said weather warnings are likely to be issued over the weekend as details of the potentially disruptive system becomes clearer.

The Met Office said the rest of the month remained unsettled, with further periods of low pressure predicted.

It also advised that it is too early to provide an accurate forecast for the Christmas period.
