An unexploded World War II British artillery shell was found in Harpswell on Tuesday afternoon.
The military ordnance was found about 1:45 p.m., and police immediately secured the area, according to Maine State Police Lt. Aaron Turcotte.
The state police bomb squad, with help from a Maine Air National Guard’s explosive ordnance disposal team, identified, removed and disposed of the artillery shell, Turcotte said Wednesday morning.
The investigation found that there was no explosive material left in the shell.
Turcotte stressed that people shouldn’t touch, move or examine any suspected explosives. Instead, they should immediately call the police so it can be safely disposed of.
