Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen vented his frustrations in viral fashion during a 23-19 loss to the Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football.

After the Bills were stopped on fourth down during the fourth quarter of the game at Houston’s NRG Stadium on Thursday, November 20, Allen, 29, was caught by Prime Video cameras slamming his helmet to the ground and shouting, “What are we doing?”

Allen addressed the moment while talking to reporters after the game. “Just frustration on my part,” Allen said. “In a situation like that we probably should have just banged a timeout. We got the play in late. Didn’t give ourselves a chance there.”

The outburst immediately spread on social media, with some Bills fans arguing Allen’s anger was indicative of bigger problems within the organization.

“Josh Allen slams his helmet and says ‘what are we doing’ after running the ball four times in a row,” one person wrote via X. “Tells you all you need to know about the current state of the Bills offense.”

Former NHL star Carlo Colaiacovo shared via X, “Just a reminder to Bills Fans, the management stood pat at the deadline and did nothing to help Josh Allen or improve their defense because they believed in this current group as Super Bowl contenders.”

“The Bills need a hard reset. Josh Allen deserves that,” NFL Network’s Adam Rank wrote via X.

Allen was sacked a career-high eight games during the game, which dropped them to 7-4 and two games behind the New England Patriots in the AFC East.

“It’s not fun. I ran into a couple myself,” Allen said of the sacks. “I gotta be better throwing the ball away and living to see another down, letting us play situational football and pinning them deep. Too many times I was going backwards and I gotta be better on that.”

Allen gave credit to the Texas’ defensive line, which is wildly heralded as the best in the NFL.

“It’s a good unit,” he said. “Statistically, I think they’re the tops in basically everything that you can be the tops in. They showed that tonight. That’s a really good football team.”

Allen added, “They wanted it today. We had a chance to win there at the end. Gotta find a way.”

After the game, Bills head coach, Sean McDermott, said his team has to do a better job protecting its star player.

“They had 12 hits on Josh, eight sacks,” McDermott, 51, told reporters. “That’s not a healthy formula right there. It’s not a healthy way to play or a healthy way to keep our quarterback healthy through the remainder of the season.”

McDermott explained the Bills need to do a better job of avoiding finding themselves in obvious passing situations

“That’s where the hits come, second down and long turns into third down and long, and that’s the unhealthy formula I’m talking about, and Josh takes too many hits,” the coach said. “So we’ve got to figure that piece out.”

McDermott stopped short of throwing anybody in particular under the bus, saying, “I believe in our offensive staff.”

The Bills return to action on Sunday, November 30, when they travel to play the Pittsburgh Steelers.
