PORTLAND — Since 2005, the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition has worked to improve the legal, social, and economic conditions for immigrants in Maine.
Founded by the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project and initially sponsored by Maine People’s Resource Center, MIRC has grown from a coalition of 20 members to a unique and diverse network of over 100 organizations with the same goal: fostering immigrant inclusion through both supportive programs and policies.
Member organizations work with each other and local and state legislatures to collaborate and educate, combating the most pressing issues facing immigrants in the process.
It’s an effort that inspired Norway Savings Bank to make a $1,000 contribution to the Portland-based organization and its statewide impact this month.
“Norway Savings Bank’s support directly benefits our ongoing community rapid immigrant response efforts,” said Mufalo Chitam, executive director of the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition. “We are so grateful for this support of our work.”
“With over 80,000 immigrants and refugees in Maine, it’s essential to understand the needs and priorities of Maine’s immigrant population. MIRC educates lawmakers and the general public about the many ways in which immigrants enrich communities and contribute to economic prosperity, and they work to ensure these paths are explored,” said Dan Walsh, president and CEO of Norway Savings Bank. “We’re thankful for MIRC’s work towards providing opportunities and welcome.”
