John C. McGinley Shares Glimpse Into ‘Scrubs’ Reunion for New Reboot

The Scrubs reboot is coming sooner rather than later.

Less than two months after Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Zach Braff, Judy Reyes and John C. McGinley reunited for their first table read in honor of the upcoming ABC series, fans will be happy to know that some cast members felt like no time had passed.

“[It felt] like riding a bike. Like falling out of bed,” McGinley, 66, exclusively shared with Us Weekly at the Paley Honors Fall Gala on Monday, November 10. “We’ve all stayed close over the years. Donald, Zach and I have remained very close. I haven’t seen Judy in a while, but she’s my sister. Sarah is one of the most talented women I’ve ever met on the planet. And so, given that as the ensemble, just call ‘action.’”

Scrubs, which originally aired on NBC from 2001 to 2010, followed the lives of a group of friends and employees at the fictional teaching hospital Sacred Heart Hospital.

Which ‘Scrubs’ Stars Are — And Aren’t — Returning for the Revival?

ABC confirmed in July 2025 that the network was reviving the show for season 10, with series creator Billy Lawrence signing on. Two months later, Braff, 50, shared a cast photo from a table read via Instagram with the caption, “A new chapter begins.”

“It’s always a privilege to be with that ensemble and with Billy writing something, I’ll do it,” McGinley told Us from The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. “It’s not a big ask. Going up to Vancouver, you stay in the same time zone, so it’s not like you’re going to Chicago or New York. Nothing against Chicago or New York, but it’s awfully easy to stay in the same time zone.”

While McGinley is staying mum on what life is like for his character, Dr. Perry Cox, in the new reboot, he was quick to praise Lawrence, 56, at the Paley Honors Fall Gala.

“Bill Lawrence has spine and courage,” McGinley said onstage when presenting the producer and screenwriter with the Renowned Storyteller Award for his work in various shows, including Scrubs, Cougar Town and Shrinking. “His integrity is indefatigable! And so, of course, his storytelling acumen is epic!”

While the night may have put the spotlight on Lawrence, Reba McEntire and other honorees, Us couldn’t help but congratulate McGinley on the upcoming 40th anniversary of his film Platoon.

When asked to share what he remembers about the project, the actor had nothing but fond memories.

Judy Reyes Took ‘Scrubs’ for Granted Before Revival: ‘Didn’t Appreciate It’

“I remember being a broke actor in New York, being a member of the New York Shakespeare Festival and [theater director] Joe Papp letting me go from play to play and being employed at an off-Broadway schedule and salary, which was $318 a week and living on $318 a week,” he recalled. “The agent took 10 percent of that. So that’s $31. So it wasn’t even $300. And being happy. Being an employed actor in New York, the Shakespeare Festival, I thought, was as good as it gets. And at the time it was.”

When looking back on his career, McGinley said there is one more role he would like to tackle if given the chance.

“Sweeney Todd,” he said. “Because it would be impossible. And, two, it’s the greatest musical written in our lifetime. And I can’t sing, but I would find a way. Maybe one day.”
