Regarding Maine Republicans questioning Laurel Libby’s voter ID strategy after the big loss last week, the problem for the Republican proponents of Question 1 is not tactics, it is the fact that the question they pushed was fundamentally false. There is no election security problem in Maine, not with ineligible voters and not with absentee ballots.
The far-right Heritage Foundation, normally a champion of voter suppression measures, found that from 1982-2025 there were only two cases of convictions for voting irregularities in Maine, both in 2010. Neither involved ineligible voters or absentee ballots.
From whining about “rigged” elections when they lose, to gutting the Voting Rights Act, to the Jan. 6 insurrection, Republicans have engaged in a long campaign of voter suppression.
The question we might all ask ourselves is: Why would I vote for a party that works so hard to make sure that I cannot vote at all?
