A man who subjected a 13-year-old girl to a “campaign of violent rape” in Rotherham will serve three more years in jail after he was convicted of abusing another teenager.

Sageer Hussain, 40, is already serving a 19-year prison sentence after being convicted in 2016 of raping the vulnerable 13-year-old girl in the Yorkshire town.

Now he has been sentenced to another three years after being convicted at Sheffield Crown Court in July of further offences against a 14-year-old girl.

Sentencing him, Judge Charles Thomas said: “The sad fact of this case is that, despite her young age at the time, you were not the first man to have abused and exploited her in this area and around this time.”

Earlier this year, the jury heard how Hussain raped the girl, now in her 30s, sometime between July 2000 and July 2002.

Having led her down an alleyway in Rotherham town centre, he refused to let her leave unless she had sex with him.

He committed the crime with two other people present, one woman and one man, and the victim cried throughout the ordeal.

Judge Thomas said that from the age of 13, the girl would spend time in the town centre with “Asian men and other young girls”, and would be given alcohol.

He said it was “clearly not uncommon for sexual activity to take place between the girls and the Asian men who would congregate in that area”.

Officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) contacted the victim after identifying she may have been sexually abused as a child.

She told the officers what Hussain had done and he was charged in February 2024, before being convicted again in July.

Hussain was initially jailed in 2016 alongside seven other men, including his brothers Arshid, Basharat and Bannaras, who were sentenced to 35, 25, and 19 years in prison respectively.

Referencing the brothers, Judge Charles said the defendant had “no good role models” and accepted that he was only a teenager himself at the time of the offence.

Nonetheless, he said: “You had a choice and you knew what you were doing, and you knew it was wrong.”

The victim, he said, had suffered a “devastating effect” to “every aspect of her life” as a result of the abuse.

She was present for the sentencing, and Judge Thomas thanked her for how she conducted herself during the court proceedings.

Hussain’s new sentence will overlap with his existing one, which is now nearing the end of its custodial element.

His conviction was secured through Operation Stovewood, the NCA’s investigation into child sexual exploitation in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013.

So far the operation has identified more than 1,100 children involved in exploitation, with 49 convictions, and custodial sentences totalling more than 1,500 years.

NCA senior investigating officer Alan Hastings said: “The victim has shown enormous strength and fortitude in reporting what Sageer Hussain did to her.

“The woman bravely told officers about Hussain’s horrific crime against her, and that significantly helped our investigation.

“Officers subsequently identified corroborating evidence that enabled us to secure justice for the woman.

“Hussain, who is already serving time for raping another girl, will now remain in prison for longer.

“Reporting child sexual abuse can feel daunting, but there are specially trained officers who are waiting to help victims and seek justice for them if they feel ready.

“I encourage victims to contact police, no matter how long ago sexual abuse occurred.”
