Q: We finally saved up enough money to remodel our kitchen. But after seeing some homes get remodeled for our friends, we’re a little concerned about the process. Do you have any tips? —Mandy

A: Remodeling your kitchen can be an exciting project, but it also needs careful planning and preparation. For some people, the process goes smoothly, while for others, it can feel overwhelming.

Whether you’re updating a few features or doing a full-scale renovation, there are steps you can take to make the experience as stress-free as possible.

My first suggestion is one I learned the hard way from remodeling my own kitchen. If possible, consider relocating during the project and staying elsewhere.

I understand that this may not be possible for you, but if it is, do it. Kitchens are the heart of the home, and disturbing this space can affect your daily routine.

Even with the best precautions and contractors, it is a messy and inconvenient process.

If you decide to stay in your home during the project, safety and preparation should always be your top priority.

Begin by setting up a temporary kitchen in another part of your home. Stock it with essentials like a microwave, toaster oven, and a small fridge. This will help you stay functional while your kitchen is unavailable.

If you have pets or children, physically block off that area to prevent accidents.

Before starting the remodel, take time to plan every detail. Create a list of your must-haves and nice-to-haves and establish a realistic budget. Research contractors thoroughly, read reviews, and ask for recommendations from friends or neighbors who have had similar work done.

Once you have chosen a contractor, get everything in writing, including detailed contracts, timelines and payment schedules. Ensure that permits are obtained from your city and that all work is completed to code.

Clear communication is essential throughout the process. Keep in regular contact with your contractor and ask questions if anything is unclear.

Be patient, as delays and unexpected costs are common in remodeling projects.

Keep a journal of all conversations, decisions, and changes to the plan, along with plenty of photos as the project progresses.

When ordering materials like cabinets or countertops, confirm the delivery dates and inspect everything upon arrival to ensure it is correct and undamaged.

Do not get in the way of the work, but keep a close eye on the project’s progress.

If you notice something that seems off, bring it up right away. It is easier to resolve issues early on rather than waiting until the project is complete.
