HBO Max has added a number of films this month, and lined up the streaming premiere of A24’s romantic comedy Materialists.

‘Materialists’ (2025)
It may be too soon to say that Dakota Johnson has shrugged off the stigma of Madame Web, but she did have a modest hit rom-com earlier this year in A24’s Materialists. Lucy Mason (Johnson) is a woman who has been unlucky in love, but she prides herself on her ability to bring compatible men and women together as a professional matchmaker.
At a wedding for one of her clients, Lucy is reunited with John Pitts (Chris Evans), her former boyfriend whom she may have some lingering feelings. Lucy also meets Harry Castillo (Pedro Pascal), a very wealthy man who has more than a professional interest in her. Lucy sees qualities she likes in both Harry and John, but even she isn’t sure if her material needs outweigh the emotions of her heart.
Materialists will stream on HBO Max on November 7.
‘Hellboy’ (2004)
Hellboy is actually kind of a romance story too, somewhere between its superhero trappings and a plot by a former Nazi to bring about the end of the world. The reason why the original Hellboy holds up over the two reboot movies is twofold. Director Guillermo del Toro infused the comic-book character with a lot of life, while actor Ron Perlman brought out his humanity and his soul even under heavy prosthetic makeup.

For most of his life, Hellboy has been the secret weapon of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. He’s also desperately in love with Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), one of his fellow B.P.R.D. agents. When Hellboy feels threatened by Liz’s apparent interest in another man, Grigori Rasputin (Karel Roden) emerges from beyond the grave with a plot to force Hellboy to become the destroyer he was always meant to be.
Hellboy is streaming on HBO Max.
‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ (2012)
Quvenzhané Wallis became the youngest performer to be nominated for Best Actress in Oscar history for her turn as Hushpuppy in Beasts of the Southern Wild. Wallis was only nine when she portrayed a six-year-old, Hushpuppy, who lives with her father, Wink (Dwight Henry), in the Louisiana bayou beneath the protection of a levee system.
Although Wink is gravely ill, he still cares for Hushpuppy, who depends on him for pretty much everything. His worsening health forces Hushpuppy to fend for herself, which is a tall task for any child, much less a six-year-old. Hushpuppy may not be living in reality as we know it, but it’s all that she has as she faces the prospect of life without her father.
