Based upon our personal experience, we are satisfied that we know the real Graham Platner, and we are supporting him.
We’ve had Graham as a guest in our home, participated with him in a small group discussion aimed at ensuring a fair local election in Sullivan and discussed democratic values with him at a rally in Ellsworth. Graham has argued effectively for a social order that values everyone, not just continuing to pay massive benefits to the rich and powerful.
To be distracted by some of his past words, written when he says he was still recovering from PTSD produced by eight years serving our country in war-torn Iraq and Afghanistan, wastes our time, energy and money. It is a distraction, too often promoted by opponents and those who don’t believe in personal growth and redemption, when we are daily confronted by illegal and unconstitutional actions by President Donald Trump and his GOP enablers.
Politics is about building power. Thousands of Mainers who have listened to Graham at the scores of town meetings he has held across the state have embraced his vision. They want a different way forward, based upon values in our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution. So do we.
