For years, Republicans across the country and here in Maine have been waging a war on voting. This year, we are seeing a Republican-led effort to restrict the ability of registered citizens to vote by absentee ballot. They have used tactics that, in my opinion, are meant to mislead Mainers, one of which is to not even mention the absentee ballot restrictions at all.
We have a president in Washington who is essentially doing anything he wants, from allowing increases in Obamacare premiums and not funding SNAP benefits to handing out billions of dollars in American taxpayer money to an unpopular president in a foreign country. He can do this because Republicans in Congress have essentially abdicated their responsibility to act as functioning members of our democracy. Their silence is deafening!
We, the people, have a chance to elect more leaders who can provide that check on the president’s actions. It seems Republicans understand their policy stances can no longer win elections, so they’ve decided to restrict access to voting.
We deserve a fully functioning and representative Congress. And all Mainers deserve the chance to vote in the way that’s best for them. Vote “no” on Question 1!
