Violence has erupted for a second successive night in Dublin near a hotel housing asylum seekers.

Stones and fireworks were thrown at police in the Saggart area, on the western outskirts of the Irish capital.

A Sky News crew was caught in the confusion as police twice charged at protesters.

It is understood several police officers have been hurt.

Sky News correspondent Connor Gilles is at the scene. He said: “Many of the protesters are very young. They’re breaking up the road to get hold of bricks to throw at the police. The police themselves seems to be trying to kettle the protesters.”

It is the third night of demonstrations at the Citywest Hotel following an alleged sexual assault in the early hours of Monday morning close to the hotel.

A demonstration in the wake of the alleged assault on a 10-year-old girl turned violent on Tuesday night. A police officer was injured and six arrests were made.

A 26-year-old man, who cannot be named due to rules that apply to all sexual assault cases in the Republic of Ireland, appeared in court on Tuesday charged over the alleged attack.

Police had earlier pledged a “robust response” if there was a repeat of last night’s violence.

Between 7pm and 8pm, hundreds of protesters faced off with around 40 uniformed officers.

The uniformed officers were replaced with the Public Order Unit, the members of which carried plastic shields and additional body protection, after members of the original cordon were struck with debris, stones and fireworks.
