Crews will continue demolishing one of the Interstate 95 bridges over Broadway in Bangor next week.
That will require Broadway to be closed there from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.
During that time, crews will be demolishing the bridge that carries southbound interstate traffic over Broadway, the department said Wednesday morning.
There will be no vehicle traffic allowed to pass through the construction zone, though flaggers will be on-site to help pedestrians get through safely. Drivers will need to follow posted detour signs.
That demolition work began this past Sunday.
It’s the latest step toward the eventual replacement of the aging bridge carrying I-95 traffic over Broadway. The 152-foot steel girder bridge, built in 1960, is crossed about 50,000 times daily and is in “poor condition,” transportation officials have told the Bangor Daily News. The Maine Department of Transportation expects to complete that work by late next year.
The project will cost $30.6 million, about $9.3 million of which is covered by a federal grant.
In recent years other I-95 bridges in Bangor have been replaced, including the Ohio Street bridge in 2020 and the Union Street bridge in 2016.
