Penobscot County Administrator Scott Adkins has tendered his resignation after finding a new job, county officials announced Tuesday.

Adkins’ first day as county administrator was Sept. 12, 2022. His resignation is effective Nov. 7.

Previously, Adkins served as the county’s finance director for nine years, then was Milford’s town manager for a year. In 2016 he took a job as county administrator for Hancock County before returning to the Penobscot County government in his current role in 2022.

The Penobscot County commissioners expressed gratitude for Adkins’ work, saying his “commitment to Penobscot County has been invaluable, and we especially want to recognize the profound benefit his prior experience brought to the role.”

The commissioners said they are looking to fill the post and are considering hiring an interim administrator in the short term.

The county government covers the county jail, sheriff’s office, registry of deeds and probate court, and it’s responsible for services for residents of the unorganized territories that fall within county lines.

Adkins could not immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday.
