On Friday, Oct. 17 in Caribou, Owen Corrigan had a hat trick, including two dramatic goals, as the Caribou Vikings stunned the previously unbeaten John Bapst Crusaders 4-3 in overtime.
The Crusader girls upended the Vikings 5-0.
Going into the boys game, the Crusader boys had allowed only three goals all season, while the Vikings had averaged more than five goals per game. The Vikings struck quickly, as Declan Miller finished a lead pass from Owen Corrigan for the 1-0 lead two minutes into the game. The patient John Bapst attack got on the board ten minutes later on a goal by Kasper Hansen, and took the lead when Rafa Rentosa scored off a crossing pass from Josh Pangburn. Caribou tied it up just before the half, as Owen Corrigan was awarded and converted a penalty kick.
The Crusaders took the lead back early in the second half with a pinpoint entry pass by Gavin Rogers that was converted by Cooper Lewis. For the rest of the second half, the Crusaders controlled game kept the Vikings at bay.
With under a minute to play, a long throw-in by Caribou’s Carsen Richards was batted around the box in a frenzy, and Corrigan blasted the loose ball into the net with 42 seconds remaining to force overtime. Late In the first overtime, Max Morrow tipped the ball to Corrigan, who finished for the golden goal game winner.
With the thrilling victory, the Vikings ended their regular season at 10-3-1. The Crusaders suffered their first loss to go to 9-1-2.
