I think Janet Mills has been a wonderful governor for Maine. Though I haven’t always agreed with her, she served Maine well with honesty, integrity and strength. I humbly thank her for her long years in service to Maine.
That said, I am sorely disappointed that instead of gracefully stepping aside Mills has mistakenly, in my opinion, chosen to run against Republican Sen. Susan Collins. It’s time for new voices to lead us through these difficult times.
Democratic candidate Graham Platner, a working-class candidate who has gained nationwide attention and already raised $4 million, is a solid opponent to Collins. In addition to his tough presentation, Platner impresses me with his empathy and understanding of issues that affect all Mainers in a state that is both red and blue politically.
Maine needs Platner particularly at this time of divisive politics precisely because he is a new kind of candidate. I think we are all weary of career politicians and are looking to new leadership and a different kind of political landscape, which Platner can deliver because he is that everyday, working person that Mainers can relate to.
In a race that is crucial to reclaim control of the U.S. Senate, it is imperative that the Democratic National Committee does not sideline candidates that are strong contenders, while pouring big money into running Mills, who I believe represents the old Democratic establishment. This is a show we’ve seen before and it ends badly.
I ask Gov. Mills, as her last great service to Maine, to step aside and not run against Susan Collins.
